A Clear Lake guide

Things to do in Clear Lake

Where to eat, what to rent, which beach β€” and how to find the crash site on the first try.

Getting here

Straight on I-35, about two hours from Des Moines and two from the Twin Cities, with nothing comparable in between β€” which is the whole reason this town has a second-home market and the towns either side don't. Mason City is nine or ten miles east, fifteen minutes, for the bigger shops and the hospital. There's a commercial airport between the two towns with daily service to Chicago.

One honest note: the interstate does close a few days most winters, and when it closes it closes properly. Worth building in if you're picturing every other weekend from December to March.

Healthcare

MercyOne North Iowa in Mason City is the regional hospital, with the Mason City Clinic attached β€” a teaching hospital with residencies, which is unusual for a town this size. There's a family medicine clinic in Clear Lake itself, weekdays.

Schools

The Clear Lake Community School District covers the city and most of the area around it, three buildings K through 12, all in town.

The west end is the one people get wrong. Ventura and the far west end are in the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura district, and despite the name there's no longer a public school in Ventura β€” classes stopped there after the 2019 school year and every grade goes to Garner, about twenty minutes west. The buildings sold in 2023 and now house a private school. Worth knowing before you fall for a house out there. District lines don't follow the shoreline neatly, so ask me and I'll confirm it for a specific address.

Shopping

Main Avenue is the shopping street, and the one category people genuinely travel for is antiques β€” three dealers within a hundred yards of each other, with a fourth doing stained glass and salvage. Beyond that it's boutiques, gifts and home decor: a pleasant browse if you're here, not a reason to drive.

And the boring bit

πŸš— Docks, permits, what the water in front of a lot actually gets you, which authority zones the parcel, what you can build and where β€” all real, all my job rather than your homework. Ask me about an address and I'll find out before you spend a Saturday on it.

Ask me anything

  • Where to eat, and which night to go
  • Who to rent a pontoon or a golf cart from
  • Which beach is best with small children
  • How to find the crash site on the first try
  • What’s on at the Surf while you’re here
  • Where to stay, and which end of the lake to stay on

Text me before you come up and I’ll tell you what’s worth doing that weekend β€” what’s open, what’s on, and where to eat. No appointment and no pressure. I do it for people who have no intention of ever buying a house here, because that’s the town, not the job.

Places open, close and change their hours. Everything here was right when I wrote it β€” check with the venue before you drive across the state for it.
